I have been making cakes since the 70’s. I have done a ton of wedding cakes, birthday cakes, children’s cakes and any special occasion cakes. But I think my favorite cakes to make are my Grandchildren’s. You can see a few of the ones I made here.
This past weekend was my Grandson’s 3rd birthday and my daughter told me that he wanted an excavator on his cake. She was going to to do a construction themed party.
So I knew the idea I was going for on his cake so this is what I did:
Supplies: (Affiliate links for your convenience. See full disclosure here.)
- Mini construction vehicles
- Wilton sheet pan
- Wilton 8″ round pan
- Desired cake mix
- Parchment Paper
I lined each pan with parchment paper and baked chocolate cake per the instructions in the sheet pan and the round pan.
When the cake was cooled I took the round cake and placed it on the corner of the sheet pan, leaving me room to decorate.
I frosted the whole cake and then created a three with frosting and filled it in with “dirt”, crushed Oreos.
I then started placing the vehicles around the cake making them look like they were working. I scattered more “dirt” and that was it! It doesn’t have to be perfect since it’s made to look messy.
I think by the look on his face my Grandson loved it! After all the guest were served we let him dig right in and play with his trucks!
