Remember the old trunk that I mentioned in a previous post? Well…it finally had some new life put into it and is on full display for us and others to enjoy.
This old trunk has been in my husband’s family forever. We have kept it hoping some day to actually use it instead of just sitting someplace out of the way. I finally had an idea while sitting at our lake house on Seneca Lake.
I love flowers. They’re colorful, bright and make me smile. With the harsh winter and unpredictable spring, I couldn’t wait until I could start planting and the old trunk was the perfect project.
The trunk was going to be sitting outside (under a deck, but still in the elements) so I had to first prepare the trunk for the flowers and the weather.

Preparing the Trunk:
I started by taping off the trunk and spray painting the hardware black.
I then decided to use a product called Never Wet. It’s by Rustoleum and serves as a barrier from rain. I sprayed the entire trunk with the 2 step process.
I used two old totes that I had in the garage that fit perfectly into the trunk and cut the height down to the same level as the trunk.
On the inside of one of the totes I also cut drainage holes and then added rocks I picked up from the beach, to the other tote for drainage.
Place the tote with the rocks into the trunk and and the tote with the holes inside of that.
For the inside cover I wanted to add a little something to make it more interesting when it was open. I bought some faux moss and with a high temp glue gun attached the moss to the inside cover of the trunk.
I didn’t want the trunk open all the way and of course I didn’t want it closed either. So, with a metal strap I screwed it to the lid and the bottom of the trunk to keep it open just a bit.
Now the really fun part, fill the tote with soil and choose your flowers to plant!
The trunk now sits on a deck at our lake house and I absolutely love the look. Plus, one less item in storage and a trunk of memories, filled with beautiful flowers for us to enjoy.
